Ellen Burke


ellen burkeEllen Burke received her Bachelor’s Degree from the State University College at Cortland and hers Master’s Degree from Adelphi University. She taught elementary school in the Sachem Central School District for thirty-four years. In addition to her teaching career, Ellen served the Sachem Central Teachers’ Association in various capacities including Vice-president and President. She also served the district as the founding Director of the Sachem Teacher Center and held that position for eleven years until her retirement. She coordinated and administered in service education activities for over 1200 employees. She also coordinated the Teacher Mentor Program for the district until state funding was cut and the program eliminated.

Ellen currently serves as the president of the Retired Educators Sachem Chapter and the Vice-President of the New York State United Teachers Retiree Council 23. Shortly after her retirement Ellen was invited to work for Cortland, her alma mater, as a College Supervisor for Student Teachers. She supervised student teachers in the Sachem and Bay Shore School Districts for two years. Ellen thoroughly enjoyed working with her student teachers and sharing her years of experience with them. It was a very rewarding experience.

Ellen has served as a volunteer for the Carol M. Baldwin Research Fund since 1997. She sits on its Advisory Committee and also serves as the Co-coordinator of the Baldwin Volunteer Committee. Ellen has been on the planning committees for the Fund’s Galas and golf outings.

Ellen has also been involved with several other philanthropic organization. She has done volunteer work for the Monsignor Thomas Hartman Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and has served as a member of the Board of Directors for Long Island’s United Way.

Ellen enjoys traveling and is an avid golfer. She is a twenty-two year breast cancer survivor.
